Natalie Gray has had fantasies about Doug Carlyle for the past year. Doug is a profiler with the police. Natalie is worried because he was responsible for sending Stephen Harcourt to prison and his subsequent death. Now Joshua Harcourt is out to avenge his brother’s death.

Work sends Natalie to meet Doug at his family cabin, and she finds he’s been waiting for the right moment to live out his libidinous dreams with her. He knows she’s receptive. He has the gift of “seeing” into the minds of others. He’s a strong and highly erotic lover, but the two still have to deal with a murderer. Joshua has already killed two of those he considers responsible. And before he kills, he destroys that most precious to his victims. Doug fears for Natalie’s safety more than his own.

Natalie is the bait here. The two have been hiding their feelings from themselves, but not the rest of the world. Their coworkers know of the attraction, and so does the bad guy. The climax is chilling and satisfying, and there’s some interesting commentary about Doug’s “gift.” This is a spooky and engrossing novella.
