Lilith, Shiloh, Aunt Elizabeth, Uncle Percival and Nathaniel were all there was left of their sisterline. The backwoods of North Carolina is where they built their home. But their home was at risk now, both from their depleted numbers and outsiders trying to destroy all they have. Lilith, the leader of this small group, has very little trust for outsiders. Past experiences had taught her a hard lession, so Lilith was very protective of her family.

Kurt Walker is a very rich and powerful man and he claims to be in love with Lilith (Lily) Harker but he also wants to buy Lily's land. Kurt had heard all the stories about the Harker's Haunt. He'd heard all kinds of rumors regarding their strange ways. Kurt even knew it was ill advised to get involved with them, let alone be in love with one of them. Yet every time he saw her or thought of her he could feel the pull on his heart.

Kurt and Lily become involved with building a clinic to bring better health care to the area. Kurt had built the clinic and Lily had donated the land. Kurt had hoped it would bring them together. But Lily seemed determined to mistrust him and Kurt didn't know what to do next.

Dr. Bridget O'Keefe had taken the position at the clinic she couldn't turn it down. Not only would she have her own clinic, but also Kurt Walker would pay off all her student loans. Bridget didn't mind signing a three-year contract; it was worth it just to get out of debt. Little did she know that everything she had ever believed in would come into question? The moment Bridget met Lily she felt a bond, an acceptance she'd never know before. She felt the same when she came in contact with Shilon and the other Harker's. What happens when she meets the mysterious Nathaniel is what starts Bridget to wonder about life. Their ways and customs, the very natures of their beliefs were so different. Bridget had some tuff issues to work out, but before she can even start to think someone breaks into her clinic and tries to kill her.

Nathaniel was what they called a throwback because he was different. Ever afraid to show his face to Bridget, Nathaniel longed for her to love him, but she would have to see past his face and few could do that. Nathaniel stayed in the background, watching over Bridget. Someone wanted to hurt her and he had to protect her, even with his life if necessary.

This is a fascinating story about an ancient culture; they are human but not human. The structure of their family life and their beliefs are so different from our own and at the same time so believable. Ms. Karmarin has written a beautiful story that will make you cry one minute and feel total joy the next. Nathaniel is a man who will win the hearts of many a romance reader. He sure won mine, as did all of the Harker family. If your looking for a sensual romance with a shadow of darkness hanging over the hero. Be sure to get Barbara Karmarin, Covenants soon, I recommend it highly. Enjoy!
