| Coming home to the man of your dreams only happens in fairy tales, right? That seems to be true for Jodi Brand. She left Purvis, Wyoming at the height of her rodeo queen ride. Now she's coming back to put that behind her to start a real job that will help handicapped youth. Teague Treadwell has always been the town bad boy. But now he's grown up, spruced up and building a life that he hopes will earn him respect. Each is trying to live down the past in their own way but the people in town sometimes make it difficult.
Joanne Kennedy pens a tale that's a great blend of old fashioned westerner and current day realities they have to live. What seems like it could be just a simple romantic yarn is made complex by complications. One of them, named Courtney Skelton, is part stalker. She seems to manage to get involved in every aspect of Teague's and Jodi's life. Young Troy is excellent as a man with Down's syndrome who wants to be treated like a man. He stars often as one of the most hard working, warm hearted people you'd ever want to read about. Can't forget the animals either. Beelzy the goat, Vegas the nearly blind horse, Honeybucket Courtney's dog, and others provide comedy as well as tweaking our compassion. This book has all the flavor of the modern day old west. The boys may not always be the stars. They don't belly up to the bar or wear six shooters on their hip but there's plenty of honor among both the men and women. Ms. Kennedy has penned a really awesome suspense that takes us into the heart of the modern day western.
