Steve McKenna has wanted Gordie "Doc" Monroe as long as he can remember, but she's always kept him at a distance. An attack in the forest by Steve's house leaves Doc injured and unable to do anything but let Steve take care of her wounds. Though her resistance to him begins to crumble, it's not until a second attack, this time at her clinic, that she gives in to her attraction to him and acknowledges they belong together. But danger still lurks, threatening their newfound happiness and forcing Doc to make a decision that may shatter her fragile reality.

From the first few paragraphs, it is easy to tell that this story will be fast-paced and somewhat suspenseful. Steve's reaction to the struggle he hears from his deck, before he even knows who is involved, illustrates the type of person he is. His shock and despair at finding out that it's Doc who's been attacked highlight the depth of his caring for her. Gordie is forced to face her longing for Steve and how much she cares for him when just being near him soothes her. His patience with her gives her the chance to come to terms with her desire, which is exactly what she needs before she can move on from her past. And the attacks are the final push Gordie needs to get over her reservations and fall into the relationship both she and Steve want. They complement each other very well, and the chemistry between them leaps off the page anytime they're in the same room.

This is a wonderful addition to the Coyote Hunger series. Rhian Cahill has done a great job of making each story in the series better than the one before. The central characters from the previous two stories come back and play a role in this story as well. The friendship between all the lead characters is a nice background for Steve and Gordie's relationship. This story has a very satisfying ending, but the return of other pack members will leave readers anxious for the next story.
