Chris Shields feels he'll never have the family he wants. Growing up in the midst of nine young ones he adores kids. Kate McKay has two precocious little girls who seem to take to Chris right away when they're thrown together at a church event. She remembers Chris from High School but they've never dated. Now their one time working together seems to escalate into an affection both want to see go further. Will his sterility stand in their way?

Kelly McDonough pens a tale of two people whose past has made them hesitant about trusting again. Both Chris and Kate seem to be such wonderful people it's easy to hope for the best for them. Maureen, Chris' ex fiancée and Scott, Kate's ex come across as rather shallow. Neither seem deserving of the great people they rejected. Maureen rejected Chris to get what she wants. Now she wants him back. Scott can't seem to make up his mind what he wants. He wants custody, then he doesn't. He's remarrying, then he's not. His character is almost like a roller coaster ride of changes.

Father Tierney seems to be a unique cleric who's supportive even though Chris and Kate always seem to be doing something else on Sundays. Chris' huge family is like families everywhere, sometimes sticking their noses in where they're not wanted. More often than not young Megan and Molly seem to steal the book away from the adults. They're precocious and adorable proving kids can get right to the center of things. This is an enjoyable book that often seems to be like a piece of real life.
