Emily West is a radiology technician in training at a small-town Florida ER. Connor McKendrick is her supervisor and the Director of Radiology, a very abrupt and business-like individual with excellent clinical skills. Emily had been widowed two years earlier, at age twenty-eight, at the motorcycle crash-death of her husband, a physician. She didn't need to work, but could not bear to stay at home trying to assuage her grief and loss, so began training as an X-ray technician. Helping others seems to help her to heal, and she enjoys the work and most of her colleagues.

While Connor is called away to a patient still in surgery, Emily must X-ray a prisoner brought in after attempting to escape from a hit-and-run. The prisoner's eyes give a direct clue to his insanity, and Emily hopes just to finish the long list of ordered X-rays so that he can be taken into custody. The prisoner, Daniel, reads Emily's name on her name tag and recalls that her husband is a physician. He fixates on her from that point on. He repeatedly arranges to return to the emergency room on various pretexts, solely to get near Emily. In the meantime, Connor and Emily separately battle their growing feelings, and neither is willing to acknowledge the emotions involved toward each other.

Laine Morgan pens a particularly intriguing story with well-developed characters who have personality as well as good appearance, and an intriguing story line that captures and keeps the reader's interest throughout the book. She knows her background well, and almost any reader will find this book of interest.
