Joanna is a research scientist with a bent for the world of the vampire. She has recently broken up with her fiancé of three years and to enliven her life she has become a part of an online vampire group. She has even researched vampires and is not entirely sure that they don't really exist. She dreams of a vampire lover, and the dreams seem real, almost like a memory, but that is impossible. When the group hosts a ball in her hometown, Joanna attends, dressed as her alter ego, Countess Raven. Most of the people are like her, fascinated with the concept of vampires, though some actually believe that they are truly vampire. At the ball, she meets a compelling man who seems strangely familiar to her. She is drawn to Anton and leaves with him. Anton is truly a vampire and intends to take what he needs from her and leave, but he senses a vampire soul in the mortal woman's body.

Joanna is a very likeable character. Her scientific mind tries to grasp the concept that vampires really exist and that she was one in a former life. Anton is a little more mysterious but that adds to the story. The dialogue can be a little stilted and melodramatic at times, but the story is good, and the concept of reunited lovers works well here.
