Werewolf-hunter Kyla Yeager has dedicated her life to her job. While on a mission to the small, eerie town of Heavensent, Maine, her fate is intertwined with the seductive and mysterious, Nick Radford. Little does she know Nick is one of the very beings she's sworn to destroy -- or that she and Nick are hunting the same prey.

Despite decent characters and setting, the book begins with a slow start. Stylistically, the writing is good, but lacks the flare which transforms a familiar plot like this into a page-turner.

Kyla is a strong, take-no-prisoners character, with a haunted past that has turned her into lethal hunter. Nick is a reluctant werewolf, ashamed of what he's become, and constantly battling the animal within. His melancholy existence is turned around when sexy, spunky Kyla enters the picture.

Tortured, shape shifting, heroes are my favorite kind. But Nick spends too much time feeling sorry for himself (instead of kicking ass and seducing Kyla) to make him truly appealing.

More scenes are spent with Kyla investigating the odd happenings of the town than the relationship between Kyla and Nick developing. (Kyla has more scenes with her best friend, Todd than she does with Nick) and the story feels more like "Murder She Wrote" than "Buffy the Were-Hunter". Numerous supporting characters and flashbacks push the romance between the hero and heroine into the background.

That said. Cursed Mates, is a light, easy read, with good plot and fun moments. A strong atmospheric setting really brings the story to life and an interesting hero and heroine set this story up for stardom. But for my personal taste, I would have preferred more time spent exploring the chemistry between Kyla and Nick.
