With the help of Dr. Pemberton, his buxom housekeeper Mrs. Hudsucker, and a cast of zany characters, Detective Quayle solves the mystery and saves the day in several short stories. All of these adventures take place in an alternate world very similar to our own.
This delightfully quirky collection of short stories made me laugh. I fully enjoyed the light and playful take on Sherlock Holmes and a variety of other well known characters throughout film and books. The unexpected character references and funny descriptions of their different quirks helped make them instantly recognizable and completely unforgettable. I may never be able to watch another spaghetti western or Austin Powers film again without laughing for all the wrong reasons. I really like Sherlock Holmes stories and this was a great alternate version of Holmes, without the darkness that Holmes stories can evoke. If you enjoy Holmes and Holmes-like tales -- and you aren't a purist Holmes fan -- this is a great one. This book was very well written and the stories flowed from one to another with ease. Even though they were short stories they read more like long chapters in one large book, which should satisfy those who only like short stories or those who only like long stories alike. Each story was fully developed and wonderfully entertaining. It was an easy book to read and I liked the fact that if I needed to put it down I could pick it back up and get right back into the story. A very satisfying rainy day or beach day read.
