| Clancy Rogers is a widowed mother of two. When her daughter seems to get involved with the wrong crowd she finds herself in the middle of a nationwide hunt for a drug lord operating locally. The agent in charge of the DEA is Thadeous Johannsen, a man who makes her feel things she hasn’t even thought about since her husband died. Together with many other colorful characters they help ferret out the people trying to spoil her town.
Sam Cheever has penned one of those stories that will have you reminiscing about your childhood while thrilling to the hunt for the bad guys. Many times the main characters take second place to Ms. Polly Pelham, the local news columnist. Her way of telling the happenings around town make for a hilarious addition to the book. I’m sure a lot of parents will relate to Clancy as we follow her through the perils of raising children who are warm, loving and precocious. Jennifer, “The Princess” and her addiction to pink takes me back to my own daughter’s teen years. Adam is twelve going on thirty as he helps solve problems the adults find too challenging and is a heroic person in his own right as he helps save the day. The animals? Eight dogs, a ferret, a horse all with unique talents and foibles steal the show every time they’re around. This is one of those books with a multitude of two and four legged characters who will work their way into your heart before the tale is even half over. Sam Cheever does it again with one of those warm, witty books that will hold you from first page to last. She crafts her story well and fills it with dialogue and scenarios easy to relate to but hard to put down. I’d love to see more adventures set in Grooster, Indiana!
