Cole Berkley and Alexandra Reed were homicide detectives in the Tampa Police Department. They’d been partners for five years. Cole had never met any person stronger, tougher or more professional that Alex. He’d rather know she had his back than any of the other four male detectives. They’d been there for each other through personal struggles as well. She’d been there for Cole through his divorce and he was there for Alex after her father’s suicide. Alex would rather die than show anything that could be perceived as weakness of any kind. Alex had always denied her sexual needs. She achieved some release by writing erotic novels using a nom de plume. But when a serial murderer targeted women in the BDSM lifestyle, Cole and Alex were forced to go undercover as Dom and Sub to catch the killer. It didn’t take Cole long to figure out Alex was turned on for real. At first he was shocked at this discovery about his partner’s sexual needs. Alex was humiliated that Cole should discover her weakness. He loved Alex and didn’t think he could hurt her even if she wanted it. Cole finally realized he enjoyed meeting her sexual needs no matter what it took. Alex was so humiliated, because she’d been unable to accept her sexual needs, that she wasn’t able to accept that Cole could still respect her. She couldn’t accept that it was possible for anyone to love her. She was so ashamed that she didn’t admit the next name on the killer’s list was hers. She’d rather take her chances with a serial murderer than let anyone find out she wrote BDSM erotic romance novels.

This being my first foray into the BDSM genre, I didn’t know what to expect. What I found was a compassionate and compelling look at the journey to sexual enlightenment by two normal, healthy people. It was easy to understand why someone as tough as Alex couldn’t admit she needed to relinquish control sexually. That would be weakness. It made sense that some people needed to be tied down to feel free. The mystery and suspense of solving the murder before the killer could get to Alex kept me on the edge of my seat. Even the secondary characters came across as so alive I forgot I was reading fiction and considered them real as I thought about solving the identity of the killer. Cole and Alex were so perfect for each other that I ached for Alex to listen to Cole and accept the love he had to give her. She felt so ashamed of her sexual needs she didn’t feel deserving of love. There was even a moment while the killer had her helpless in his clutches that she almost fell into the trap of believing she deserved to be punished for her desires. Cole was a strong man and he respected Alex as a detective and a person. He also loved seeing this more feminine and softer side of his partner. He liked that there was an area where she needed him. He kept those things confined to the bedroom. In the outside world, their relationship was strictly professional as always. Like Alex, I couldn’t help loving a man like Cole.
