Melissa Stanhope has lost her adoptive mother to cancer and found her dream job at the Deer Creek horse farm in Connecticut. She's thrilled to be in this exclusive training center, preparing horses as Grand Prix show jumpers.

Owner Kate Beckwith and her handsome son Stephen exude wealth and privilege, yet are welcoming and warm. Sheila Reed trains and protects Melissa as she learns her duties. And the attractive David Weller has big Grand Prix ambitions, though he lacks the Beckwith's funds and connections.

Farm manager Tim McPherson is an enigma. He drinks, gambles and avoids his duties. Yet the Beckwiths have kept him on for decades. Now he's been attacked, and the rumors are hurting Deer Creek's reputation -- and may put David in jail. Could this have something to do with an accident 20 years ago?

Melissa is charmed by Stephen, but it is David who captures her heart. The mystery of the attack on Tim needs to be solved before they can have a future together.

The horse show background is fascinating and well-developed. However, both the romance and the suspense seem to lag a bit. A little more conflict, and a few well-planted clues could have helped the plot. Author Paine has given us well-formed characters and a clearly defined setting. She gives us a rewarding conclusion and insight into a horsey universe few of us know firsthand.
