When Mary Seeton is released by her kidnapper she refuses to give Inspector Thom Brady any details about her abduction. He uses every trick he knows to try to get information. It's obvious that she's hiding something but it's not until a child is used to give her a message at school that she realizes she may never be free from the man. When her friend Nancy is taken in the same way she was Mary finally tells Thom about the threat that has kept her silent.

Amanda Sidhe gives us a well crafted tale of people with flaws that can be funny, silly, heart wrenching or downright dangerous. Mary copes with stress by cleaning, definitely not a flaw I share! Thom has become a workaholic to cope with loss of his teenage sweetheart. Officer Bette hides her gentle soul behind a tough cop veneer even if she does have pinkish hair due to a mishap with her favorite highlighter. Mrs. Jorgenson is addicted to cop shows. Fizgig the cat eats and sleeps, something I can relate to. The villain is mildly retarded but violent when disappointed or upset.

All of these characters are put together by Ms. Sidhe to give us a totally enjoyable romance filled with moments of nail biting suspense. The man they chase proves someone with his level of retardation may be gullible at times but not stupid as he stays one step ahead of their well laid plans to catch him. Mary and Thom fall in love despite the odds being stacked against them.

Ms. Sidhe gives us everyday people who are easy to relate to and tells their tale in a suspense none of us want to live through. The strong female characters give us someone to admire. Part of me can't help but enjoy reading about a woman who fights her way through devastation to get her life back.
