A small Highland village is terrorized by a killer. Women are being found raped, beaten, and murdered. The villagers blame the local waterhorse, a shape-shifter that lives in the loch and who has killed many of their people in the past. Flein is a man who is more than he appears, however. As he travels through the town, he hears the stories and then mets the waterhorse, who is also a very attractive man that he names Donnchadh. Flein believes Donnchadh when he denies murdering and raping the women but now he must prove it to the villagers.

This was an erotic adventure in with elements of Irish folklore and half-divine creatures. Flein was an interesting character who is the byblow of the god Loki and a mortal woman, this giving him a long life and an interesting outlook on people and how they affect him. Donnchadh was probably my favorite character. He can be either a man or a horse and is part fairy. Because of this, he doesn’t react to the same emotional triggers that a human would. For instance, he's upset about the murders, but not because they women lost their lives but because he feels that the villagers are his domain and the killer is, in effect, poaching. The attraction between Flein and Donnchadh is instantaneous but neither act upon it, instead letting the tension build until the storm must break or they will be destroyed. While this is an erotic romance, the main focus of the story is the mystery of who committed the murders and how the men can prove their innocence. This is the first story I’ve read by the author Chris Quinton and I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the characters and the only thing marring my enjoyment was that I would have enjoyed learning more about the background of each of the main characters. I found it to be well-written with a smoothly-flowing style that was consistent throughout the story.
