| Lexine is helping her newly turned vampire sister and her friends the vampire Knights Templar to find the Daystar, a Druid artifact. Legend has it that the Daystar will enable vampires to walk in the daytime among other things. Lexine is somehow connected to this artifact and seems to need more and more sunlight. A strange rash is turning into what looks like a tattoo. A rash of attacks on young women by renegade vampires has made the Knights and particularly Constantine, known as the Dragon, even more overprotective. These renegades caused Allie’s death and rebirth as a vampire. Constantine and Lex have had a strong connection since their first meeting. The attraction grows stronger the more the Dragon pushes Lex away. Lex is known as “the Hallowed”, and carries the power of the Daystar within her. That power will show itself on her birthday, Halloween. The Knights need help protecting her and look to the female vampire Order of the Rose. From previous experience during his horrific youth, Constantine does not trust their leader and travels with Lex to protect her. He knows that the Order of the Rose will not be enough.
This is an incredibly good follow up to Midnight Sun. I was looking forward to Lex and Dragon’s story and I definitely was not disappointed. Lex is sweet and innocent but very strong, strong enough to take on the difficult and damaged Constantine. The Goth garbed vampire’s childhood was so horrific, that even his being burnt to death at Chinon did not compare. It is a toss up who was worse to him, his parents or the sadistic pedophile they sold him to at the age of ten. Constantine is angry, insecure, and feels that it is impossible for anyone to love him. Lex shows him how wrong he is. She shows him a strong, brave, honorable and loving albeit stubborn person. I really loved both of these characters in the first book and was happy to learn more about them. The other Knights are also a big part of this book, but it is really Lex and Constantine’s tale. The author’s descriptions of places and people of both the past and present are wonderful, and her villains are truly evil. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Lucian, the imprisoned Knight, hopefully in the next book.
