| When Lydia awakes, she finds herself bound and unable to see. A man whispers to her and she soon realizes that she is part of a bizarre performance and her life is on the line. She endures pain and forced submission. Her only comfort is Joe, her cellmate. Lydia has no memory of her past. She and Joe are at the mercy of creatures who have none. They are tortured and debased as entertainment. Together, Joe and Lydia vow to survive and seek vengeance on their tormentors. They are completely unaware of what they will become or the challenges that will face them after they gain their freedom.
This story begins with a gruesome performance that involves pain and sex and sets the stage for a large segment of the rest of the book. The violence is graphic and brutal. The author is sparse with the details about Joe and Lydia's past. She also doesn't dwell on descriptions of the setting or the motivations of their captors. Readers are forced to focus on the ordeals that Joe and Lydia face and how they cope in the aftermath. There are moments of brilliance in this story. The combination of physical, sexual and psychological tortures creates a taut and gripping thriller. Joe and Lydia face each new nightmare with courage. Sometimes they win and sometimes they lose the battle for sanity but they never stop fighting. Ms. Sommerland has created a world of unimaginable horror but also one that illustrates the indomitable human spirit and survival instinct. The writing is raw and contributes to terrifying suspense of the story. I was almost afraid of what would happen next. The action builds as the story plays out and I had to finish the book in one sitting to see if Joe and Lydia survived. There's clearly a sequel and I wish it was available now but I was satisfied with ending. This is not a comfortable read, it's dark and haunting. It will stay with you for some time. Warning: Graphic violence, rape and torture.
