Leah’s fiancé disappeared just three weeks after asking her to marry. She suspects he left because he was white and she is Afro-American. Leah enjoys her job at a shelter for battered women. However, she was recently stalked by the husband of one of her clients. The stalker is now in prison, but Leah still feels uneasy. She is not giving in to her fears, but she tries to be cautious.

She meets Vince at the florist shop. He is handsome and desirable, working on a novel. He is new in town, and it is a while before we find out why he really came to Riverdale. Leah is attracted to him, but then finds herself being tormented again. Is it another wife beater? The florist with an obvious crush on her? Could it possibly be Vince? Or someone else all together?

Leah seems well-grounded and real. She has a fulfilling job, friends, neighbors, and a cat she adores. She has an interesting family history and a likable personality. Vince, desirable though he seems, is a bit more of a mystery.

This is a satisfying puzzle. The author is a bit wordy and melodramatic in places, but the suspense is real and engrossing. The tension builds to a satisfying conclusion. Don’t peek at the epilogue and spoil the surprise!
