Gabrielle Murray has regretted every moment of her mother’s marriage to Roderick, an emotionally and psychologically abusive wealthy man with the title to a Romanian castle. Her mother died, and Gabrielle moved far, far away; but now Roderick has finally passed on, and Gabrielle must return to claim the inheritance and attend the reading of the will. As Roderick had no heirs, and she is the only heir of her mother, the castle and surrounding property is now hers. The servants are few and speak no English, and are surly in attitude. The attorney is nearly as surly.

He tells Gabrielle to go to the family tombs below the castle to pay her respects to Roderick and her mother, but to avoid the ancient catacombs further on. Gabrielle doesn’t heed him, but instead explores, and when she hears a voice shouting, she finds a way to open the catacomb door, revealing two imprisoned men. Ivan and his brother Erik, of course, are not ordinary men: entombed in a catacomb lined with iron, they are vampyr. In their hunger, since Roderick has not fed them in two months, Ivan nearly drains Gabrielle, so that in order to preserve her, he must turn her as well.

Deadly Inheritance presents a new spin on the Dracula and Jonathan Harker legends, an approach that proves to be delightful and intriguing as well as sensual. The characters are very well-delineated, and the action is fast-paced. I especially appreciated the inclusion of the psychological and historical background, both in the present circumstances and in the lineage of the Draculs and Harkers. Jayelle Drewry spins a wonderful tale which is subtle yet appealing and sexy in its sensuality and romance.
