Melissa Vanderbilt-Smythe is an heiress who has been missing for 4 years and has been continually in the papers since as a runaway heiress. She was engaged to Nathan Alexander, now Senator from California who aspires to become President, when she disappeared. Her father and younger sister have been very worried. Nathan hired Cody Richards, an ex-New York cop and now bounty hunter, to locate Melissa and return her to her loving family. However, the situation isn't as told to Cody. Cody's attempts to return Melissa put both of them in great danger. As the situation becomes more threatening to Cody and Melissa, passion becomes a factor too. What will happen to these two?

I loved the characters of Melissa and Cody. I hated the character of Nathan. The characters were very well-written. The story moved very quickly and had action, danger, deception, betrayal, risk, political intrique, power plays. Melissa was a very strong yet vulnerable woman. Cody was a definite alpha male. A lot of his behavior reminded me of the character Indiana Jones. Nathan was one of those characters who intrigue you because they're so evil, like J.R. on the TV show Dallas, but a character you could never trust for a moment. The characters working with Nathan are also very scary. What was most frightening to me as reader was that there may actually be people in the world who think and behave like they do - for purely evil, corrupt, greedy, power-seeking reasons. The passion that developed between Melissa and Cody was unexpected. Melissa hadn't trusted anyone for so long, it was spooky to her that she could look at a man as a good guy. Her instincts also told her Cody would never harm her. Cody thought Melissa had lived a spoiled charmed life and that she had only run away for attention. As time went by and he saw all the threats and danger she had been dealing with, he began to realize that he'd been told a pack of lies about Melissa. Unfortunately, there was one lie of omission on Cody's part. Would Melissa ever be able to understand and forgive him and give their love a chance? This book is a very exciting story. I recommend it to everyone.
