Harley was the father of Kate’s heart, her own having deserted her when she was a baby. He was her emotional support when she returned to her hometown in rural Montana after her marriage went up in flames. So when he is murdered she is determined to see his killer brought to justice. Steve, the local sheriff, is working hard on the case but the lack of clues and suspects frustrates him. Then, Kate suffers a series of attacks, and fearing for her life, he moves in to protect her. The two have been attracted to each other since Steve arrived in town, but neither is willing to risk their hearts again. In fact, the reason for the breakup of Kate’s marriage may well end their relationship anyway, if she lives that long.

The author has created a suspenseful mystery set in remote and secluded rural Montana. The list of suspects is not very long, but everyone seems to have an alibi. The inhabitants of this town are pretty quirky, but Ms. Parkinson creates a feeling of community in the small town. It is also a nice twist that Kate is a mystery author and part time waitress. The author keeps the reader guessing throughout the tale, developing the relationship between Steve and Kate deftly along the way. The atmosphere that she has created is really vivid and vaguely threatening, perfect for the story. This is a really good and suspenseful mystery for mystery as well as romance lovers.
