All the neighbors know that Paul Proctor is a boorish lout who beats his wife. Sisters Genevieve Cornell and Mamie Winfield saw him slug her from their kitchen window. And the elderly ladies haven’t seen her since. They want Detective Lieutenant Terry Ross to put the beast away for murder.

The investigation turns up circumstantial evidence, but no body. Timid Molly Parker is officially missing. Her tattered handbag and battered car remain at home with her husband’s sporty vehicle and tailor-made wardrobe. Her beloved rose garden remains untended. Paul has a mistress, two ex-wives, a fancy boat -- and seemingly little interest in finding Molly. He claims she’s just gone off to sulk. Molly had wanted a divorce. It’s a community property state, and Molly’s money founded Paul’s plumbing dynasty.

The sisters want justice. The alert the press and further infuriate Paul Proctor.

The mystery is highly satisfying, but the real story is the effect this case has on the 23-year Ross marriage. Mallory Bowen, seemingly the only friend Molly Proctor left behind, invades Terry’s every thought. Molly is (or was) mousy, dowdy, and sweet. Mallory is a high-priced escort, gorgeous and mysterious. The relationship between the two women is highly unusual. It just may hold the key to resolving the mystery. And it just might destroy Terry’s relationship with Phyllis, the ideal policeman’s wife.

This is a highly unpredicatble story. The aging sisters are delightful and believable. Detective Lieutenant Ross may be suffering a mid-life crisis. He is intelligent, likable, and courting disaster. Paul Proctor is the kind of oaf everybody loves to hate.

Elizabeth Stewart has created great characters and a satisfying climax. This story is hard to forget. It is not a traditional romance, but it is a great suspense novel. This is a real page-turner.
