The editor of the Bead Weekly paper has been killed in a hit and run accident. Jeet Vaughan is taking temporary charge as editor as a favor to the widow. His wife Robin is less than thrilled -- Bead, Texas, is as dull a town as she could ever imagine, and what was she going to do with her horses?

It turns out the town is not as dull as she imagined. An Anthony Perkins look alike lives in the spooky house by the cemetery. A well-known dressage instructor has taken refuge here. A Christian vampire movie is being filmed. And, oh yes, the editor's death was not an accident.

Robin has a smart mouth and an overactive imagination. Her musings are a joy to read, as she jumps from conclusion to conclusion and places herself in peril. Jeet is not suited to being in charge of a small town paper -- he has a nose for fine food, not the news. Robin loves him, and she manages to extricate herself from various dangers without the help of her spouse. Boone DeWitt wants a second career as a journalist and thinks he's located a witch in town. The widow Della is an ex-beauty queen. There's not a truly boring character in the entire town!

Carolyn Banks has done a great job of mixing humor and horsemanship, solving an interesting crime and giving the reader unusual and highly likable cast. Nothing is as it seems, but the solution is both fun and satisfying. Be on the lookout for Banks' other equestrian mysteries.
