| Maggie Mortis is a Demon Hunter, following in the footsteps of her
father who was killed by one of the evil beings. She is aided by her
guardian Damian and his assistant, Elise. Maggie is in love with
Damian, but she is the wrong gender for him. One night, one of
Damian's casual affairs is with a demon and he is killed. But Maggie
has other deaths to avenge. Having lost two guardians and a father so
far to demons, she doesn't want or need another. But the Council
sends her Raphael, Damian's half-demon brother. Rafe wants her, all
of her, but she isn't sure that she is willing to give herself up to a
demon, even if he is beautiful, talented, and Damian's brother.
Maggie also has other things to worry about; the most powerful demon
that she has ever encountered has managed to kill almost everyone she
has ever loved, and believes she has some kind of connection to him.
This is an incredibly quick moving story, full of action. Maggie is a very likable heroine who feels that no one loves her, and that it isn't safe to love anyone else. Everyone she loves gets murdered by a demon, after all. Rafe moves into the picture already loving her, though she doesn't believe him. However, she is willing to take advantage of his various "talents" to both of their satisfaction. Ms. Bardsley writes some pretty inventive love scenes in this story. I look forward to the rest of the series.
