This story opens with Guthrie requesting a divorce from his wife, Alicia. They never loved one another; the marriage was based more on the picture needed for society than on mutual respect and feelings for one another. But on this day she has a small surprise for him; theyre expecting a baby.

The story jumps then eight years later with Guthrie having discovered another little surprise; Alicia was able to really pull her little revenge off. It turns out that she had been pregnant at the time of the divorce with twin daughters. Since Guthrie hadnt been able to be at the premature birth, he never knew that Alicia had given one baby up for adoption immediately afterward.

Guthrie wants his daughter. The pain of learning that he has twin daughters, and has never known the second child, is so hurtful. His next thoughts arent nice in terms of thinking how to get her away from her adoptive mother, Marissa. The overwhelming idea is that this problem needs to be dealt with right now, and money is probably the best solution to use as motivation. All rational thoughts leave him over the next few weeks in terms of solving the problem; nothing seems to go right and he himself seems to make everything worst, even he has to admit. At the same time his thoughts are not only of his newly discovered daughter but also of her adoptive mother. From intense dislike to extreme lust; both Marissa and Guthrie realize that the initial dislike has quickly evolved into something else. Tempers are hot and negotiations seem to be going absolutely nowhere and then two 7 year olds decide to take matters into their own hands. They have the perfect solution.

The reader can understand easily the dilemma faced by all in such a situation. The anger of Guthrie in realizing that he had been duped and cheated of his daughters first years, the fierce protectiveness Marissa has for her beloved child, and the helplessness felt by all friends and family involved. This is a beautiful story for all the true romantics out there looking for a wonderful tale; definitely recommended reading.
