Deacon is a vampire with nothing left but his need for revenge after the destruction of his community and betrayal of the Guardians. Rosalia, a Guardian with a plan, hopes that she'll be able to convince Deacon that he can get his revenge by helping her. It's also an excuse for her to have Deacon, a man she's been watching over for ninety years, close enough to touch. When Deacon reluctantly agrees to work with Rosalia, she sees him becoming the man she's always known he can be, one she can love. Deacon needs to decide if he can let himself be loved.

These two strike sparks off of each from their very first conversation at the beginning of the novel. Their dialogue is witty and fits their characters, showing not only how well they know each other but the fact that they've each been alive for more than a century as well. Their personalities are illuminated both by the glimpses of each characters' thoughts and by the actions they take throughout the book. Both Deacon and Rosalia continue to develop as intriguing characters as their story unfolds, and readers will find themselves unable to put the book down.

Though the novel tells the story of Rosalia and Deacon, other characters from the Guardian series also make appearances. These secondary characters enrich the overall story with the way their interactions with Rosalia and Deacon pale in comparison to the ease with which those two work together toward a common goal. Their partnership outside of the bedroom is but a small reflection of how well the two of them fit together in the bedroom. Rosalia and Deacon have a very steamy and extremely combustible relationship.

Meljean Brook has definitely outdone herself with this novel. Everything about this book will draw readers in and have them turning the pages as the tension mounts between Rosalia and Deacon and the action builds as their plan takes shape. The ending fits perfectly and will have readers looking forward to the next installment in the Guardian series.
