Because of her father's boasting, Gwyneth must convert a room full of straw into gold or they will be punished by the King. In a puff of smoke a figure in black promises to help in return for a kiss. The next night his payment intensifies. On the third night before Gwyneth comprehends, her child has been sacrificed. Not willing to give up her daughter, she travels to his underworld home where she is given three chances to provide him pleasure and win her freedom.

This was a wonderful adult adaptation of a well-known fairytale. I enjoyed the premise and the love scenes were smoking hot. Our demon lover was so complex; one minute ruthless in his pursuit and then so compassionate. For me Gwyneth was not quite as developed. I believe that I glimpsed more into our hero's soul than I did into our heroine's. She never fully revealed how she felt about her father's treatment of her yet she showed so much gumption when dealing with her demon. I felt some of the language just didn't seem to flow with the story. I have no problem with coarse language it just didn't seem to fit the period or the character's naivety. The connection of the two main characters was fabulous and they balanced each other well. The setting and the description of Elohim and it's pale inhabitants was marvellously magical. I'm looking forward to the next fairytale in the series.
