When after twenty years Maryalice is finally contacted, online, by the high school hunk who took her to the prom, then took her virginity, then dumped her, she hesitates -- but only briefly. She needs to be ready, because she intends to humiliate him, then make him suffer -- big time. Except the high school hunk, Mike Hubbard, somehow manages to find out where she lives. Suddenly, Maryalice no longer feels safe, and her next door neighbor, Ali, who is always around when she needs him, is mysteriously away from home for the first time since they'd met.

Once lord of the demons, Ali had been as mean and nasty as a demon could be until an accident suddenly changes him. Now he's stuck living in a whole different world and doing something no demon has ever done -- falling in love with the woman next door.

In this very erotic novella, Kate Austin shows us from the start that Maryalice is not afraid to experiment sexually, and Ali has seen and done it all, which should make them the perfect pair, if they'd only get together. Though I enjoyed the way these two isolated individuals finally got to know each other, I wanted to know more about their relationship. The author does give the back story as to how Maryalice helped Ali learn to be human, and what difficulties Ali encountered while attempting to "fit in." Ms. Austin also lets the reader know that Maryalice is confused by some of Ali's differences, so his final revelation does not come as too much of a shock to her.

Ali had some very good reasons for not wanting to deepen his relationship with Maryalice, as much as he would like to. But the only reason Maryalice gives initially for not pursuing Ali is because he is a "nice guy." From my perspective, this is due to the short length of the story, not Ms. Austin's story telling abilities. Though I understand that this book is the first in a series, and we will learn more about these two characters and others as Ali's brothers become involved, I still felt as if I'd been dropped in the middle of something when the story ended. I definitely wanted more.

All in all, I really enjoyed Maryalice and Ali's story, and look forward to reading about Ali's sibling demons and their romantic entanglements.
