Marie was bound to a promise made 400 years earlier by the women of her family. They were promised a life of riches and immortality in return for their love to Laven. For generations, mothers would pass this “gift” to their daughters sacrificing their souls for Laven. Not this time. After the horrifying death of her mother, Maria knew that all Laven had to offer were lies and damnation. Marie meant to break the hold Laven had on her family and save her daughter Danielle from Laven’s hold. She had broken the hold on herself and hid the secret away from her daughter.

Danielle was angry with her mom for the changes she had made in their lives. Her mother threw herself into a life of Christianity and gave up the way of life that Danielle held dear to her heart. She was a Fortune Teller. She believed in the paranormal and refused to give up that way of life. When Libby told Danielle about the crystal ball her mother asked to hide away for her, Danielle knew she had to have it. The story of a demon possessing the crystal ball made it all the more intriguing to her. She could not believe her mother had hidden away such a priceless family heirloom.

Libby should never have told Danielle about the crystal ball. She knew Marie believed it was cursed. When she had met Marie and her beautiful Danielle all those years ago, Marie believed a demon was after her. Libby thought by telling Danielle the story of the crystal ball it would give Danielle a little bit of insight for the reasons Marie was now a convert to the church and help them repair the broken relationship between mother and daughter. Libby had helped Danielle release the demon Marie feared by giving into Danielle’s wishes. She now had to figure out a way to save Danielle from the lure of Laven’s love.

Katherine Irving has given this story a strong base plot and a well developed character in Libby. Her descriptions of demons and mystical creatures are lifelike. There were several smaller plots thrown in to help develop supporting characters but I found that it jumped from plot to plot too quickly for the base plot and all of the main characters to develop properly. This is not a romance of the heart it is the romance of the dark powers and the trickery of loving a demon.
