| Healer Linnea is heading out on a full-moon night when she hears the noise of a crashed flyer and moans of pain. Immediately she rushes to the scene, but is astonished to find the nearly unconscious pilot is Crown Prince Rajan, whom she ran off ten years ago at gunpoint. Her first realization is the need for healing, her second is that she must hide him, an Ajinda, from any Nor’Euro rebels who might be in the vicinity. In order to prevent escalation of the war between Ajinda and her own Nor’Euro race, which would surely result if he radioed in news of his crash, Linnea resorts to “dirty tricks” and applies the fabled but believed mythical Nor’Euro healing compound to her lips, then sneaks a kiss. Immediately the hormones and pheromones of both begin to intertwine in a complex pattern of essential interaction. Now their only hope of either staying alive is to join intimately before the next evening!
Kelsey Lewis does a remarkable job of world-building in this short story; and what an imagination to conceive of a healing aphrodisiac which works this kind of magic on individuals, and yet is fatal if intimacy fails to occur! Now THAT is an imagination to honour! Rajan {who is drop-dead gorgeous for sure!} and Linnea {a very wise and intelligent lady} are well-developed characters, kept apart by the wars of their people and by secrets. Yet the possibility exists that the two might overcome. Check out Desirable Enemy and see if they succeed.
