Kacy Carwell was attacked and tortured two years ago. Her tormentor was never found and Kacy is haunted by dreams of ecstasy and terror. She's become pretty much a recluse, getting by with Valium and her vibrator, and the support of her sister Ginny and nephew Peter. Peter's baseball games have become the center of her social life. She lives on investments and disability, shrinking from the touch of any man.

Her neighbor Peter Woods would like to be more than a friend, but she feels no physical attraction towards him. A new neighbor, Gulliver Knight, unleashes her passions, but does she really know anything about him?

Kacy knows people think she's crazy. She has unreasonable panic attacks and sees her stalker everywhere. She's gone to the police with several false alarms over the years.

She regains faith in herself in this spine-chilling novel. I was on the edge of my seat several times, but I found the solution disappointing. The motives of Kacy's abductor were never made clear. The police knew of another victim, but the connection , if any, between Kacy and the other woman is never given. Nor is there any discussion of the long interval between episodes for this "serial" criminal.

Gulliver seems to be the perfect man, but Kacy is a little too ready to bed him immediately after her two year period of abstinence. Her actions and her life are somewhat mystifying.

Brenda Williamson definitely knows how to create tension and suspense. This is a real nail-biter that holds on to the solution until the very end. I just wish she had given the reader more insight into the mind of the bad guy. What made Kacy (and that other unnamed woman) his chosen victims? And why did he leave them alive? Weren't there any physical clues?

I may never know, but it is the mark of a potentially good writer that I am still thinking about it!
