Max Starr was thrown into a murder mystery, not by her choice, but there she was, smack dab in the middle. Sticking her nose where it didn't belong, trying to figure out the connection with other recent murder victims.

Max was a widow, her husband Cameron was killed right in front of her eyes one night in a convenience store. Even though she blocked this night out as best as she could, Cameron was still with her. In her thoughts, in her mind, in her heart. It was like he never really died. It was his death that fueled her to get to the bottom of the recent murder of Bethany Spring. She knew there was a connection, she just had to find it.

That wasn't going to be easy for her. DeWitt Long was on her heels. He at first thought she had something to do with the murders. She had no choice but to tell him how she knew what was going on. But telling a cop that her dead husband was helping her solve these crimes was not an easy thing to do. And explaining that Bethany had possessed her body, helping her get the answers she needed, well that would be next to impossible. No one in his or her right mind would believe her story. No one, except DeWitt.

DeWitt had no choice but to listen to her, she was popping up every time he turned around. She was right in the middle of the crime scene and searching for information. He should have booted her out of town and sent her on her way. But he didn't. He instead starts falling for Max, and falling hard.

Does Dewitt let her get away with prying into the case? Does he help Max with finding the answers that she was looking for? Does Max share with DeWitt the complete truth about what really happened to Cameron? Does she confess to DeWitt how she feels about him? Or does she keep it all bottled up and buried deep in her heart?

Ladybird, DeWitt's mother, knew Max was special. Her late husband Horace talked to her too. Ladybird understood Max, even helped her when it came to getting around her son DeWitt. Ladybird was even Max's lookout when she broke in to find the answers. But would it be too late? Would Ladybird tell DeWitt where Max was and why? Would DeWitt have enough time to save Max from being killed when she found the answers she was looking for?

Desperate to the Max is an amazing book. JB Skully is a very talented author in my opinion. Once you begin to read this book you can't help but get drawn in. Her characters are so believable that you feel every bit of the story as you're reading it. The passion, the pain, all of the emotions a love story is supposed to have is all wrapped up in this book. Add to that, mystery and murder... in a word, perfect.
