| Captain Marian Trafalgar and her crew have been returned to a back world planet just as they were on the verge of finding a new planet. Now they're guarding gelded work-slaves in the wheat fields. In this futuristic world, men are either eunuchs used as slaves or sexually whole men who are pleasure-slaves. Alone without her pleasure-slaves, Marian is saved during a walk in the wheat fields at midnight by an oddity -- a whole man who is a work-slave. She and Rolen have a tempestuous affair, wondering when they would be caught breaking one of their world's biggest laws.
Devarian Renegades is the newest novella in Ms. Dafoe's series. The main characters, Marian and Rolen, were well-written, but I did not enjoy them as much as characters from earlier stories. The secondary characters, including Marian's pleasure-slaves, were much more interesting. There were some interesting plot points which were buried in the story and the story basically flowed well. Sexual encounters between Marian and Rolen were incredibly graphic and arousing and I often found myself squirming in my chair. Continuing the basic plot, Devarian Renegades was a great deal of fun. I hope that Ms. Dafoe will continue writing the more stories in this series.
