Shumei seems to be cursed in a societal structure where hair color is used to judge a person’s worth. She has black hair, the lowest on the social rung. She and her brother survive the best they can after an illness takes their mother and much of their town. Vallen is a sex demon who opens whole new worlds of sex, class, people and challenges to Shumei and her brother Oka.

Ruby Duvall has written an excellent story. The fickle nature of classes takes a big place in her book. In this tale wealth and power is determined by the color hair a person is born with. Even those who should be upper class because of hair are often belittled by those better able to wield their power.

Vallen is a human condemned by a witch hundreds of years ago. With his action in loving Shumei he shows that even those thought to be demons can be better than the so-called upper class.

Throughout the story Ms. Duvall pens Shumei as a good person, rarely even speaking back to those who belittle and use her. I adore the way this author builds the story, shows the true character of each person and rights the wrongs that have been done to the weak. It’s a superb story of good versus evil with a loving Divine One picking his chosen one on merit rather than on class or power.

The dialogue is sad, fun, sexy, funny and well done as each part of the story dictates. The way each character is built piece by piece as good or evil by their actions helps us love them, or not, as the case may be. The story builds slowly to more and more powerful scenarios as each person finds the strength in their character, their love and their magic. It looks like there may be a sequel to this story. I sure hope so. I adore so many of the people introduced in this tale.
