Christina Harris was about to become Mrs. Edmund St. James in an arranged marriage that her father had planned for her. Ever since her mother had died four years ago Christina's father seemed to live only for gambling and had little time for his daughter.

On the eve of her wedding Christina realized that she hardly knew her intended groom and she really didn't want to marry him. Taking a walk in the garden she met Devon Mitchell a guest who was at the home not just for the wedding but was planning to do business with Edmund. He was kind and sympathetic to her and promptly took her back into the house after their walk only to meet the glare of Edmund. Later that evening when all were asleep Edmund barged into Christina's room and tried to rape her. He told her he had paid good money for her and she was his and would soon learn to obey him. She fought him off by knocking him out and fleeing the room. Devon Mitchell was walking on the outside when he heard screams and came to help. Explaining her situation Devon agreed to help her to safety and arranged for his servant to take both Christina and her maid Lily to town where they would be safe in his hotel room. Devon knew he could not let her go back to Edmund after he saw the bruises on Christina's face.

He had planned to tell Edmund in the morning that he was be leaving and that he regretted he would not be at the wedding when he received a telegram stating his father had an accident. Still giving his regrets to Edmund he headed back to town and gathered Cristina, Lily and Robert and set out back to Texas.

Slowly Devon and his small party made their way home and both he and Christina were beginning to have feelings for each other. No longer was he dressed in his formal clothes but in buckskins and seemed more at home with that attire. As they made their journey Christina discovered that this man who had saved her from the abuse of Edmund was more complex than he appeared.

This is a true romance and I doubt anyone would not be touched by this story. The two main characters hare so strong they carry the whole story and they seem to reach out and bring you into their world. A must read for all who love romance. This is excellent!
