| Barrick is determined to find his mate, and in order to do so he’s found a woman who will help him… for a fee. All he has to do is give her his heartstone with a lot of money and she will travel around the galaxy until she finds the one it responds too. It sounds simple enough, but he had no idea just what he was getting into when he let a piece of himself go. Now that the peddler has found her, he has to go retrieve her to get his stone, willing or not.
Alycia has had a hard life, but animals have always been her solace. She’s working at a big cat sanctuary, and it’s been good to her. After a failed attempt go help a cat give birth, imagine her surprise when a big cat tackles her, turns into a catlike human, then takes her to another dimension… claiming to be her mate. I didn’t really feel like there was a lot of chemistry between the two in this story. Most of the time, I felt like Alycia was just doing things in order to get free, and really didn’t have the overwhelming feelings for Barrick that you would think a mate would. For that matter, Barrick didn’t seem to have any more feelings for Alycia than lust either, considering the first time they were together he was initially more interested in getting pheromones from their union to make money with. I guess the real problem was that although I liked Alycia, I didn’t really care for Barrick, he seemed stiff and arrogant to me. At times the story didn’t flow very smoothly and I would find Alycia in circumstances that didn’t make a lot of sense. I liked the over all premise of the story and thought that it would make a great series once the writing smoothed out, as there are a lot of characters that could have their own book (Barrick’s brother, for one).
