| Zara is a gorgeous, self-centered, vampire who has awakened later than she intended and is out looking to find some action in the way of blood and sex, both of them her passion. She finds an intriguing young man named Niven and decides that he'll do nicely for what she has in mind. The only problem is, Niven isn't exactly what he seems. To further complicate things, her old mentor, the vampire who made her, has tracked her down and has plans that could seriously interfere with her unlife.
Ms. Hilburn's heroine truly lives up to the title of this short story. Told in first person, chick-lit fashion, Zara explains all about herself and vampires in general at some length before finding an intended victim and putting the story in motion. The lengthy narrative in the first third of the work, while amusing at times, made it difficult to sustain interest in the story. The heroine's unapologetic, I-am-what-I-am philosophy however was done very well thanks to the author's appealing writing style and the surprise ending was fitting as a result. There is very little in the way of romance in this story for readers who like such emotion in their reading. For those who like a sassy story and don't need a happily ever after, it should prove an adequate read.
