Riley Perez is an agent with DUE, the Department of Unusual Events, a subsection of the Department of Homeland Security. She is an empath and a shapeshifter who can't shift. Her partner is a telekinetic half demon named Jason Ross and they are assigned to find a legendary spade that may or may not confer immortality upon the holder. It was discovered on an archeological dig in Peru and the two people responsible for the dig, Sonya and John Braden are getting kidnapping threats on their young daughter. They have hired the prestigious Cerberus Security firm, but DUE has Riley and Jason on the scene also.

This is a gripping story with elements of suspense, the supernatural, and a great romance. Cam is one of the owners of Cerberus and a Werewolf and Riley is very attracted to him. You would think a shapeshifter and a were would have something in common, but apparently shapeshifters have a deep prejudice against weres, thinking them less than human instead of more than human like themselves. Riley is a bit of an outcast among her kind, so her biases are not as firmly set, so her romance to Cam proceeds well. The plot is very involving and I had a hard time putting it down for any amount of time. I loved the two main characters and the chemistry between them is very hot, but the other characters like Jason and Cam's siblings Mike and Lia are equally well described and very likable. The suspense built throughout the story and the paranormal elements only added to the drama. I particularly liked the visit to the Council of Light. The climax is very exciting and the future romance between Cam and Riley is very promising, so I hope to see more of both of them.
