Gene Haynes makes specialty cakes and also owns a gourmet delicatessen and bakery. He also caters dinners in his business called Dinner for Two. He's the only caterer in Sacramento that prepares dinners for parties less than six. Gene has colorblindness and puts color labels on all his dishes and table settings. Misty Jones makes floral and driftwood arrangements. She also teaches floral arranging classes at night. Misty wants to approach her rich friend, Raymond Lane, to see if he would be willing to loan her the money to purchase a Victorian home for her floral business. There were living quarters upstairs that would be perfect for Misty and her roommate Lorna Blake. To put Raymond in a receptive mood, Misty arranges a dinner for two catered by Gene several nights later. The morning of the day the dinner is scheduled Misty and Lorna were out jogging and saw this incredible hunk. When Misty opens her door that night to let the caterer in, she sees it's the hunk from the river that she saw earlier that day. Gene recognized her too. The chemistry between the two was immediate.

The characters of Gene and Misty are very likable, like people I know, and very much alike in their independence and strong need to do things on their own, especially in business. Misty's parents are retired in Arizona and very supportive and loving. Gene's father disappeared shortly after the birth of his brother. He has one brother and one sister. His mother is on her sixth husband and his siblings are both on marriages three or four so Gene is very worried that he could pass on a colorblindness gene as well as a defective marriage material gene. The relationship between Gene and Misty is very sweet and genuine and surprises both of them. Several supporting characters are also involved in their story including Lorna Blake, Misty's roommate, Raymond Lane, Misty and Lorna's rich friend, Sam Bronstone, Gene's part-time helper at the deli, and Dave Arnel, Gene's friend. This story is a fun read and I recommend it to everyone. I look forward to reading future stories by Ms. Evans.
