| When her fiancé proposed, Amber couldn't see a reason to say yes, so she broke things off. When Jeremy enters the jewelry store where she works in search of an engagement ring, she recognizes the same panic in his eyes that she had when she thought about getting married. Over the course of his shopping, they get to know one another. When Jeremy breaks things off with his girlfriend, the two of them begin a relationship.
Lauren Gallagher is a talented author. She has a gift for making her characters come alive. We get to see through their eyes, experience things with them, feel happiness and disappointment with them. In that respect, Disengaged is no different from her other pieces. The story is an exploration of what it means to become engaged, what it means to contemplate spending the rest of your life with the same person. While I understood that, and it came across very clearly in the narrative, I felt this short piece was more of a prequel to the real story. It's the story of why some relationships fail and why others don't, but I was disappointed when the narrative didn't turn into something personal and unique for Jeremy and Amber. It's an interesting novella, but it's not as developed as the rest of Gallagher's works. Fans of Gallagher and readers who like short, simple stories will like Disengaged.
