| Talaith had a rough life so far, and it only seems to be getting worse. She was forced from her home, forced to marry a man that she can’t stand, and regularly puts up with the villagers blaming her for everything… all because of a goddess. She’s been married to the man for a long time now, and is miserable. Worse, now she’s considered a witch by her village and blamed for almost everything that goes wrong. The worst part is, she is a witch but her powers have been suppressed by the goddess, so she can’t do anything even if she wanted too. When she meets a handsome knight in the woods and he seems to want to be with her, she refuses him, even though he’s intriguing, because he’s also arrogant and pushy, and she has a mission to perform. Soon after, she starts to wonder if she made the wrong choice, especially when the village finally decides to get rid of her for good. When a dragon decides to rescue her, she’s sure it can’t get any more bizarre, until he turns into her knight from the woods…
I had a great time reading this story, it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The dialog between Talaith and Briec is hilarious, they don’t let up for a second on each other because they love to argue, and the relationship is definitely a volatile one. I liked Talaith, she was a great character that was more than capable of taking care of herself and standing on her own two feet. She certainly had some surprises up her sleeve! Briec is almost funny in his arrogance, but not over the top too the point that he’s annoying or ridiculous. He’s genuinely bewildered sometimes about why Talaith doesn’t appreciate his importance. The interactions with all the characters are laugh out loud funny sometimes, and the characters genuinely liked each other. I don’t think it’s necessary to read the first one in the series to enjoy this one but it made me want to go back and read the other book in the series, To Challenge A Dragon, which tells the story of Fearghus and Annwyl. If you like snappy dialog and great characters, The Distressing Damsel is definitely one to pick up.
