Dermot Marshall and Sebastian Stockbridge, Viscount Huntington, were best friends for years. Dermot had a daughter named Kathryn "Kat" Marshall whose companion was Lynette Shirley. When Dermot went to America to visit the colonies, he left the guardianship papers for Kat to go live with her aunt. However, Kat had other ideas. She forged the documents which made Sebastian her guardian and working through Dermot's solicitor, traveled to his home and surprised him into taking control of her. Because he was an unmarried male, he insisted that his sister, Lady Amelia, come live with them and chaperone her coming out. Kat had loved Sebastian since she was a little girl; he barely remembered her.

Throughout the time that it was assumed that Dermot was dead and Kathryn was presented to the ton, Sebastian was on-guard against the young men who insisted on pursuing her. Sebastian was constantly alert to the fact that he should have no amorous feelings for Kat. However, he was forever frustrated with his attitude toward her. One potential suitor proved confident that Kat was interested in him. This resulted in Sebastian going to him and demanding that he stay away from her.

This only proved to put her life, as well as her reputation in jeopardy. Toward the end of the season, Lord Stanwyke tricked Kat into going to a secluded area with him during one of the last parties of the season and, when Sebastian found them, Kat was covered with bruises and hysterical because of the risk of the attempted rape. To satisfy Kathryn's honor, Sebastian challenged him to a duel. Kathryn was so upset at the possibility of Sebastian being injured, or worse, because of her that she and Lynette slipped out of the house and returned to Dermot's home in the country at Elk Park.

This book is full of surprises including, of course, the ending. There are poignant moments and frustrating ones, but none that you will not enjoy. I was intrigued with the story and found it almost impossible to put down. Ms. Hayes has a winner in this novel.
