Returning from a visit to one of the outland farms, Doc finds his village destroyed, his family either gone or dead and his lover vanished without a trace. The few survivors hidden among the ruins tell a tale of ruthless, sadistic marauders taking what they want and burning the rest. Pulling as many people as he can together and tending their wounds, Doc vows to find the rest of his people. His father is among the dead, but his mother, his sister and lover are not. During the search he has help from Zoe, one of the survivors and an attraction develops between them.

Doc is the first book of a series. The focus is the title character and his quest to find his family and his lover. Doc is a character that, until the middle of the story, had my sympathy. When he returns to his village and discovers that his family disappeared, probably to be sold as slaves, he assumes the role of leader of the survivors. That responsibility added with the fear of what may have happened to his family and his lover, makes the reader suffer along with Doc. But that sentiment turned when he finds the camp where his family is captured, prepares a plan to free them and then has sex with Zoe. Doc is involved with Jazz, and although they enjoy sex with different partners, the feeling I had is that Jazz is the love of Doc's life. How can he have sex with Zoe not knowing if Jazz is alive or dead? From there the book has lost its grace for me.

This is the first book in the series and we weren't given much informations about the characters. But what is given us, you can follow the story and begin to understand the world in which it passes. Although he didn't like the timing for them to stay together, the scene between Zoe and Doc is well written and very hot. The same thing can be said in the scenes between Zoe, Doc and Jazz, and Jazz and Doc.
