In 1888 Salem, Oregon, Dr. Rachel Tarkiel worked for the School for the Blind. She lived at home with her politically aspiring parents and sister. She, however, didn’t fit in. As a child, she pushed her sister from in front of a runaway wagon. She ended up with a horrendous scar across her face. It forever changed her life. After being dumped by her fiancé, she focused her entire life on her career.

Clay Halsey, one of five brothers, had been blinded in a mining accident. His brother took him to the school for the blind in Salem so he could learn how to function without his sight. It didn’t take long for him to become aware of the sweet-spirited female doctor who had to take care of him after he fell off a ladder in the back of the school. His life certainly didn’t turn out as he expected.

Ms. Paty Jager has written another saga concerning the Halsey brothers. This is the first I have read. It didn’t take away from the meaning or my understanding of this book. It did, however, make me determined to read the others. While interested in finding out about the other brothers’ stories, this one was definitely written so it would stand-alone.

Jager’s characters are multifaceted and quickly captivated my interest. They were dynamic people who allowed the story to develop effortlessly. I absolutely couldn’t put the book down. The underlying mystery man who followed them throughout their travels was incredibly handled.

I applaud Jager for this series. I love western historical and this is one of the best I’ve read. I highly recommend that anyone will also fall in love with this series. You will be glad you read this book.
