| While she was in high school, Carrie fell in love with Jack. They were always together and even went to their senior prom together. Everything was good. Then the two of them had a disagreement since she was leaving Rhode Island to go to college in Texas. In a nutshell, and without giving any huge plot points away, Jack took Carrie to the prom but took Brenda (Carrie's best friend) home. Carrie was completely destroyed. She ran home then ran to Texas never returning to Rhode Island until her Nana died. She inherited everything and gets a call from the “Heavenly Dog Kennel” telling her to come and pick up her dog.
Wow! This is such a good story! With that nutshell you get the impression that Jack is an unfeeling jerk, but he's not. Jack is a Hero in every sense of the word. Yes he married Brenda and loves their daughter, but he never stopped loving Carrie in all the years since they graduated. Carrie, for her part, has never stopped loving Jack. Ms. Selwyn wrote such a dramatic story! I thought I would be weeping the entire time I was reading this and was happily surprised I didn't. I especially laughed when she picked up the dog at the kennel. The Irish Wolfhound, Ellie, was one heck of a character in her own right. Carrie spent more time running after her so she (and us readers) don't get too sucked into sadness about Carrie and Jack's past. First Jack, then Carrie, were able to release their pain from their past. Jack told Carrie the truth about what happened, and about Samantha. The two of them do get together again -- that is, until Jack tries to protect Samantha when she starts asking him questions about his having sex with Carrie. Eventually, all the characters in this book each have their own catharsis. And yes, it has a happy ending, and yes, both Brenda and Nana rest in peace at the end. While I did weep at different points of the book, I loved it!
