| Ana, the heir to the Runner Clans is in her “age of searching”. During the "age of searching", a Runner travels around on her own, experiencing other cultures and their customs. During her search, she travels for a while with some she-witches, charlatans who sell potions and themselves as they travel. The leader of the witches seems to be buying and selling large quantities of Runner weapons, making Ana suspicious. In the meantime, her brother Andru, heir to Gothman, and Gilroy, the Gothman who wants to claim her, have been following her. After a traumatic incident at the Fool’s Festival, Ana returns home to resume her duties. She finds that she has already been claimed by Gilroy, and that she is pregnant. The she-witch leader comes to the camp claiming to be both pregnant by Andru, and the real heir to the Runners. Other enemies from the past are also closing in on Gothman.
This is the fourth of the Nuworld stories, reading the others are helpful, but this book stands on its own very well. As usual, the author draws the reader into her world and won’t let you go until the end; actually not even then, the cliffhanger makes you anxious to read the next story. There are several issues that might make a reader uncomfortable. Incest, rape, and violence are involved, but are essential parts of the story. The characters are very real and develop from story to story. The character of Meah is very sympathetic, as is Gilroy. Ana and Andru grow and change throughout the story, and the plot is gripping. I can’t wait until the next installment of this engrossing series.
