| Catherine enjoyed being in control, and believed it was her ability to intimidate men that had helped make her the successful negotiator that her job required. However, it was also why she was still single. Labeled as the "Ice Lady," she enjoyed her position of power that enabled her to coolly consider what men had to offer, without giving anything of herself in return.
All that quickly changed, however, when she met Daniel Roberts. He initially appeared cool, and unaffected by her, but asked her to meet with him again later that week. During that date, Daniel calmly suggests that Catherine allow him to dominate her, assuring her that if he succeeds, the eventual reward would be great for both of them. Intrigued, despite herself, Catherine permits Daniel to slowly dictate everything he desires and expects from her, and finds herself aroused by his expert control. But she is still a business woman, with a reputation to uphold, and though Daniel's requests excite her, they also embarrass her. In many ways, The Doorway is a sleeping beauty tale. Catherine thought she had everything she wanted in life, unaware that she was merely sleep walking her way through each day until Daniel finally awakened her with a lot more than a kiss. Even though Daniel was careful to make sure his requests of Catherine offered her pleasure, despite her initial discomfort, I questioned a few of the things he insisted she do for him. I suspected every instruction he gave her was intended to raise the level of Catherine's arousal, but I could never be certain. The story was told entirely from Catherine's point of view, so Daniel's thoughts and feelings remained a mystery in many ways. This created an invisible wall between him and the reader, so that he sometimes appeared too casual regarding his relationship with Catherine, even hinting that he was seeing other women at the same time. The Doorway offers readers a peak into BDSM, although the story itself is more about realization, discovery and empowerment than kink. Catherine's submission to Daniel frees her from the icy control she's always kept over herself, while it allows her to discover her own true potential. I enjoyed Catherine and Daniel's sensual explorations. N.S. Howard's story is both erotic and classy, since the story refrains from using the crude language that is often prevalent in sexually explicit stories. For readers who enjoy dominant men and an erotic story that doesn't rely on explicit language and body part naming to increase its sensuality, I recommend you open The Doorway and discover the many delights within.
