| Cody Tanner has just inherited a castle. He has taken
a leave of absence from his computer software company
to deal with the inheritance. According to legend,
the castle contains a treasure and a dragon. Cody is
more than willing to hunt for treasure, but who
believes in dragons? He notices after a while, that
the outside and inside measurements of two rooms don’t
match up, so he suspects a hidden room. He asks his
friend Lionel to come help him search the castle.
Lionel is also intrigued by the castle, especially by
the ghost of a beautiful woman whose portrait is found
in the castle chapel. Cody and Lionel finally make
their way into the hidden room to find a shadowy woman
chained to the wall. Apparently, she is the source of
the legend. Several hundred years before, she was
cursed to be tied to the dragon of the legend. She
has to do whatever the sovereign of the castle tells
her or suffer pain. Cody, Lionel, and the ghost
Lisette try to find out how to break Eve’s curse.
I enjoyed this story. The ghost and the cursed immortal were often more human than the two men trying to free them. The dragon Mystique could have been a bigger part of the story, but the fact that he was a minor character didn’t detract from the story. This is a fairly short work, 150 or so pages, but spaced widely with large print and wide margins, so the basic story and Lisette’s subplot were more than enough. This is a nice quick read.
