To say that Megan Lewis had a serious emotional background would barely touch the level of her fear of men and dating. She never wanted to go anywhere with a man and she never accepted a drink from anyone who offered if it was unsealed. Her past experiences were horrific and included date rape drugs and a fraternity party. Her best friends were the couple, who later married, who had rescued her from the disaster. She worked in their bar and wrote children’s books but never tried to get them published.

Her neighbor, Drake Edwards, had a six-year-old daughter. He was an English professor at the local college campus. His wife Claire and his son Jimmy were killed in an auto accident. He still blamed himself and planned to never again give his heart away. He met his beautiful neighbor when he awoke from sleep and found his daughter Christy outside their apartment door, locked out.

This is a beautifully written book by Ms. Barbara Huffert. The characters have a dramatic past and a lack-luster present. Together with Christy, they work toward a different future. There were many parts of this book which were very poignant. I found it impossible not to identify with the characters and fall in love with them. I was truly excited to see how they handled their past problems.

I loved the way Drake was semi-serious when he came up with rules for couplehood. However they always seemed to make sense and became part of their relationship. I enjoyed watching the couple face their disastrous pasts and try to create a future they could enjoy. The reality that they might actually find a brighter tomorrow was almost unbelievable.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a challenging book with a highly sensual romance. The sexual scenes were sensitive yet dynamic. The book is definitely one to be read and enjoyed.
