| Five years ago Alan Francini lost his wife. In his heart it feels like yesterday and he can’t move on. Not even when he finds out that a woman he’s attracted to is dating his best friend. His inability to give up his grief has driven away a chance for love. Kathy Jamison has lost her fiance to another woman when she refused to move to San Francisco with him. Too many moves as the daughter of a man whose career with the Air Force makes her want to dig in her roots. What will it take for their hearts to heal?
Ann Warner has penned a multi faceted tale that tells the story of many characters dealing with crises and loss in their life all wrapped into the tale of Alan and Kathy. Emily Kowalski is a woman Kathy met while in college. Her diary of love, loss, coping throughout her ninety years is an excellent addition to the tale. The story Kathy is driven to write about Bobby, Emily’s son who was crippled by meningitis, is one of many parts of this book that will bring the reader to tears. She writes the tale of the boy relating to the people and animals around him with his thoughts even though he can’t speak or move. Grace, Frank and Delia Garibaldi, people both Alan and Kathy have grown to love through a chance meeting, are characters who epitomize courage and growth. This book captivated me from first page to last. I honestly couldn’t put it down. Such a tale of grief and growth might be depressing for some but it was so filled with the support of family and friendships it brought joy and fascination with the way Ms. Warner built this page after page. This is exceptional reading, highly recommended.
