Marshal Mackenzie Matthews enjoys his assignment to guard the pregnant PsiCorps agent Riley and her intimate team members, Torrin, Sky and their Handler, Quintus. He's always been attracted to all three men as well as his partner, Kincaid, and Riley's ward Ajay, but has been too afraid to do anything about it. He puts his own wants and needs aside to use his medical and psi training to ensure Riley and her unborn twins are safe and well as they all hide out in a safe house from the mysterious ShadowCorps who are after them.

This is book two of the PsiCorps series. While a bit more coherent than Book one (Ghost of Christmas Past), Dawn's Early Light is based on the same world of psychic abilities and high technology. And just as confusing in places because of the lack of background and context. The different psi talents range from Resonances and Anchors to Incubus and Succubus, with some shifters and vampires thrown in that aren't at all what you expect those terms to mean. The characters play word games with trust issues and have esoteric discussions about emotions and psychic abilities that often leave the reader behind. As with book one, the major crisis comes out of the blue, and the ending can only be explained by even more psychic illusion that the reader was not prepared for. The characters have no set of skills, no limitations, and change what they are and what they can do as if on a whim.

The romance is M/M and more emotional and mental introspection than physical. The homosexuality and multiple husbands is acceptable in this PsiCorps world and yet, while Riley is the only woman in the group and all the men circle around her, the encounters rarely include her. Like the first book, a rewrite to set up a more understandable world would make this a better story. I'd give this one a pass. Strong M/M content.
